Ingredients
4 cups all purpose flour
1 tbsp yeast
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp room temperature butter
1 1/2 cups lukewarm water
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and yeast, and butter.
Using clean hands, work the butter into the flour mixture with your fingers, until it takes on a crumbly texture.
Start adding the lukewarm water a little at a time, while using your hand to fold and mix well. Dough should be nice and soft but not sticky.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface, and knead with the ball of your hand until it’s smooth. This process helps to activate the yeast and can take from 8 – 10 minutes.
After kneading, place the dough back into the mixing bowl, and cover with cling film (prevents it from drying out), and let this sit for ½ hour.
After resting, take the dough and gently massage it into a oblong shape, and cut into 8 equal pieces.
Take each piece, knead it into a ball, then roll into a cigar shape with pointed ends (for nice crispy ends)
Lay them out on a baking tray, allowing for space in between as they will expand. Cover the tray with a damp towel or cling film, and allow to sit for another 20 – 30 minutes.
Remove towel or cling film, and bake at 300oC for 20 – 25 minutes.
Optional: for a nice glossy buttery crust, lightly brush the surface with some melted butter, or alternatively cut the bread in half while still warm, spread some butter in the middle and enjoy!
