Plumrose


Plumrose are available for a very short period of time during the year and they're the best when consumed during peak summers. While known as Plumrose to some, this fruit goes by a plethora of names across the Caribbean region. Names such as wax apple, love apple, java apple, rose apple, and water apple. It is also known as bell fruit because of its bell-like shape.


Unripe Plumrose are bright green in colour, while the ripe one take on a dark red/purple colour on the outside with a waxy pulp on the inside, and has a subtle flavour of rose petals in its pulp. They are refreshing and juicy to eat, but are sometimes turned into chutneys and dips, added to desserts and ice-creams, as well as added to drinks and other summer coolers.


Plumrose are said to have many health benefits. It is regarded as a great boost for the immune system, as it is rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Calcium, Potassium, and a great source of dietary fibre. In some countries it is also regarded as a tonic for the brain and liver.


It is allegedly very beneficial for those suffering from diabetes, as the apple polyphenols can help prevent blood sugar spikes through a variety of mechanisms.


The antioxidant vitamins (A, C, E) help the body fight and neutralise the action of free radicals that can cause cancer.


Its high Vitamin A content is also great for those suffering from eye and liver diseases, and its high potassium content is great for proper functioning of the heart.
